The expanded ban does exclude cooking fires in an outdoor grill or smoker. Violators could face civil penalties and liabilities from the NC Forest Service.</font></p>

This reclassification is needed to construct a new water supply intake in Lake James that McDowell County intends to use. A public hearing is going to be conducted in order to receive public comments on the proposed reclassification and associated fiscal note.</p>

Chestnut Knob Firehttp://www.burkenc.org/2016chestnutknobfire/Chestnut Knob FireChestnut Knob Fire<p><span aria-hidden="true"></span>The Chestnut Knob Fire was discovered on South Mountains State Park on Sunday, November 6, 2016.  The cause of this fire is undetermined and currently under investigation.</p><p>The North Carolina Forest Service, North Carolina State Parks, and the Burke County Fire Marshal's Office and Emergency Management assembled crews to work on containing the fire. Due to extremely dry conditions and rugged terrain, the fire has grown significantly and is currently estimated to be 1961 acres.</p>
