In North Carolina the Register of Deeds is responsible for issuing marriage licenses. A marriage license that is issued by the Burke County Register of Deeds is valid to use in any county in the state of North Carolina. Both applicants must be present when applying for a marriage license. The license is valid for 60 days. Once the marriage ceremony is preformed the marriage license must be returned the office of Register of Deeds to be placed on permanent public record.
Required Identification & Documentation
Applicants over 18 may use:
Valid driver’s license
Valid state-issued identification card
Valid military Identification
Certified copy of birth certificate
Social Security Number
Both Applicants must provide verification of their Social Security number. Forms of verification are Social Security Card or W-2 form. Applicants that do not have a Social Security number may complete an affidavit attesting to this fact.
The fee for a marriage license is $60. The only form of payment accepted for a marriage license is cash.
Applications for marriage licenses are accepted between the hours of 8a.m. and 4:30p.m. Monday through Friday.
