Burke County is planning the new and expanded Jonas Ridge Convenience Site. In partnership with the Foothills Conservancy, the County has acquired land that will be used for the convenience site as well as a community center and nature park.
The three-acre parcel owned by the County will house the new convenience site and convert the existing building into a community center with public restrooms. The Convenience site will have more room, additional drop off bins, and new compactors that make it easier to drop off trash.
The nature park will be on land purchased by Foothills Conservancy with a North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund grant. This land will be under a conservation easement to protect the rare Southern Appalachian bog habitat on the property. While the easement prohibits development, walking trails, boardwalks, and observation platforms are permitted.

In Concept A, there would be a single entrance and exit to both the convenience site and community center. The proposed convenience site is 25% larger than the current one and offers expanded services including rough box, white goods bin, and used oil drop off. This plan has a small, engineered wetland to treat runoff from the convenience site.
In Concept B, the County would purchase the parcel next door and separate the community center and convenience site. There would a one-way entrance for the community center and a two-way entrance/exit for the convenience site. The convenience site would be even larger allowing for more easier access and additional services such as battery recycling and additional bins. The increased space would allow for a larger engineered wetland to treat any run-off from the convenience site operation as well as additional walking trails.
